Reflective Summary

Re-Materialising

Initially this project had scope to evolve into many different outcomes, however I became fixated on the idea of “re-materialising,” creating something new out of the already existing. This became apparent after the post-modernism exhibition and therefore it took on the identity of creating accessories out of old wasted material such as old jewellery, ties and scrap material.

After my feedback I decided to focus on exploring aspects photography to capture patterns, colours and textures. I wanted to improve my photography and consequently my photoshop abilities and documenting this project has enabled these improvements. I have four developed outcomes which I have uploaded to facebook as an online gallery and to receive feedback. Creating an African inspired head scarf out of ties I believe to be an unusual but effective use of old ties. I think the ties have been re-born and gained value.

The photography aspect was difficult due to a last minute cancelation from my model, however  I am pleased with my outcome as I think they depict the element of “re-materialising” well, the fact that ties have been re moulded is clear but the overall effect of a creative photograph.

Due to the free scope nature of this project I feel I have really explored my creativity, by creating something out of ties tested my imagination and from the photography element, I learnt about lighting, space and form. Finally the impact of face book on small businesses to promote or sell work is astonishing and by uploading mine to act as online gallery has broadened my mind of the impact of social networking sites. To conclude post-modernism explored creating new art out of old art, I have created new accessories out of already existing materials and used social networking site (facebook) to promote my work.

Advertising on Facebook

 I uploaded these pictures into my facebook to advertise and display my work. During my research i contacted a vintage clothes company in Liverpool that started there business through facebook, and still uses it promote and advertise there store for free and to a wide audience. I shall see what response i receive from these pictures and revisit this project in the near future with more pieces of work. However i could create a separate page with links to a blog or website.

I think the layers work well in this image and you can really see how the ties are plaited and then wrapped around head. The colours are striking and the main focus. I like how you can see the different textures and creases within the image.

Finial Piece 2

My objective involved creating a head accessory out of old material, that's is versatile therefore can be worn in different ways. This portrait is to show how it could be worn as a thin headband, in this photograph you can see the plait and the fact it has been made out of ties. I contemplated photoshoping the tshirt straps so they became deleted however i decided they subtly enhance the pink tones that exist in the head wrap, also post-modern art is bright and controversial so i thought i would follow this form in this particular image.

Final piece 1

I particularly like this photo because of the relation between the material and the hair, a contrast in textures and the folds and knots of the tie relate the overlapping and folds in the hair. The main aspect of the photo is the head scarf which is bright and bold with the different tones of colours, further more i think the highlights that are created from the folds enhance the 3d effect.

African Ispired Head Wrap Made out of Ties

I created this Turban by folding and weaving ties I found in a charity shop. By using a four piece braid I managed to create some interesting folds that create nice textures and the bright patterns that saturate the turban, as a reult making it very eye catching and bold. Secondally I think that fact that the turban its self creates a pattern due to the folds, makes it very effective,  each level has a piece of material that links to the previous making it flow around the head.

Here i wanted to create a warm atmosphere to reflect on my inspiration and research. This photo depicts the full head turban however i have experimented with creating just a band.

However this photograph is not successful as it consists of too much portrait and i want to focus on the head band and the textures involved.

My Bangles

Here i wanted to experiment with how to display the bangles, i wanted to create atomiser instead of a sterile fixed bangle stand. I edited the photos to tweak the lighting so that the photo would highlight the colours and patterns on the materials. I also think how the  bangles fray makes them unique and for that reason by capturing a sharp photo communicates this idea.

Photographing my work

Once I create my head accessories I want to explore some portrait photography to get good quality, clean vibrant images. At the beginning of this project I started to document my work and I liked the relationship between material and the texture the hair created, therefore this an element i want explore further to capture the different textures in my work.



I want to get simple shots focusing on the head wrap that reflect the colours, patterns and texture of the selected material as the material its self will be an the most important factor due to its source, form and structure.

Postmodern Photography

This Images raises lots of issues, Questioning what is a photograph and what is a painting? Mixing the medias to communicate a new dialogue, why not? Whats the true form? Whats real? Its creating a opinion, it stirs a reaction therefore its though provoking and effective.

 Barbara Kruger

These photo text collarges by Barbara Kruger are iconic for there postmoderism values. This is another example of misxing up and experimenting with already existing images that fuel opinions of taste, value, materailism and sterotypes.

African Head Wraps

Male African head wraps are a symbol of wealth an social status, whereas the female head wraps prosperity and spirituality. The idea of head accessories as a symbolism of recognition i think is interesting for example, halos, crowns, hats and wraps. However I want to focus more on the materials that i use and how i can use old material re-create an African inspired head wrap. I want to follow the unwritten rules of postmodernism. No Rules, just a wide scope of creativity, recreating new art from the old.

Sandy Skoglund

With no rules, principles and the the questioning of reality postmodernism have created installations of madness that combine many materials. These instillation's involve photography, sculpture and design to create these imaginative, striking images. In particular I like how each instillation has depth by creating pin points figures in the middle of the images. The level of energy and movement these instillation's project with the still sculptures and bright colours is significant.

What to do with old clothes, recycle...

 Into beautiful creative pieces of art?







 

 I think these pieces are incredibly inspiring the level of imagination and application of colour, technique and material is stunning in these images. whether it is an correct use of old clothes is arguable but I think they are beautiful. I especially like how the clothes can still be identified as clothes not a odd scrap of material.

For my final pieces I want to progress from creating bangles out of old material and use ties or scarfs to create something new.

Another aspect of recycle clothes which I find interesting is that websites exist where you are paid per weight for your old clothes, your clothes are even collected...That's how easy it has become!

This links to a website that pays for your old clothes to be recycled, its interesting that websites are available to recycle clothes per weight, even recycling is becoming more convenient, having your old clothes collected and receiving payment for it.

Bangles

Inspired by Aztec pattern I wanted to create a cluster of bangles that were detailed or dainty individually but once in a set of multiple bangles they stand out and appear bold. I kept to two simple colours and each bangle is different, either braided and wrapped or weaved or wrapped leaving a gap to let the gold bangle shine through. I secured the material with cotton and i am very pleased with these bangles, really feel i have made something out of nothing here.

Photography

Another element of this project is to explore my photography skills, I shall be creative and experiment at taking shots from different angles and aperture to display the accessories.

 These photographs shows aperture well, buy changing the settings you can decide which object you want in focus, this could be the background , foreground or you can pick out a particular object. I shall explore this aspect when capturing the many bracelet's.  

Old made New

I saw this in a small independant shop, as you can see its a recycled beer bottle transformed into a clock. I just thought this was a simple but effective way of creating an unusual object out of what would have been waste.

Patch Work and Patterns

These are patch works quilts from various artists. I like these simply because of the different shapes and patterns that have been created by pieces of material.

This one reminded me of a mood board i created whilst selecting materials for the bangles i made. I am going to make images with different shapes like this patchwork, the natural forms of flowers have simply been made out of shapes. Therefore i think it will be interesting to explore what images i can create out of shapes of different colours and textures of material.

I want to carry on making different items out of weaving and braiding the different materials. Here is a clear example of a bangle that has been weaved out of thin metal. Which i think is very effective, because although overall pattern looks complicated and knotted the process is just repeated weaving of the materials. I want to explore using simple weaving techniques to create interesting designs, i shall experiment by using different colours and thickness of materials to obtain an quirky item.

Helen Chadwick - Georgeously Repulsive

Her work is thought provoking and crazy but her choice in materials means her work in unavoidable. Her work expresses emotions of lust, desire also identity and humanity but one way or another her work obtains a reaction.

She used organic materials such as meat, chocolate, snow,urine and flesh. It the choice in materials that are significant to me because it is her choice in materials that raise questions on the meaning of her pieces not the over all sculpture or outcome but the materials that have been manipulated.

An example of this which was created in the height of post-modernism, is her piece 'The piss flowers'. This was created by Helen Chadwick and her Partner urinating in the snow therefore melting the snow. But why snow is it the relation between hot and cold? Is it about the difference in males and females, Identity? This piece although bizarre defiantly starts some ideas and thoughts.
